About Music Together®
The Music Together program has been published since 1987 by the Center for Music and Young Children, an organization in Princeton, NJ, dedicated to understanding how children develop musically. The program is based on the center's research findings, which show the following:
- All children are musical.
- All children can achieve basic music competence (defined as the ability to sing in tune with accurate rhythm).
- The participation and modeling of parents and other primary caregivers, regardless of their musical ability, is essential to a child's musical growth.
- Young children’s musical growth occurs best in a playful, musically rich, and developmentally appropriate setting, free of direct instruction and performance pressure, where learning activities are accessible, interesting, and fun for both children and adults.
Developed by Kenneth K. Guilmartin and coauthor Lili Levinowitz, PhD, the songs in each Music Together collection are carefully selected and arranged to facilitate children's breadth and quality of experience. The center operates a lab school in the Princeton area where program elements are constantly assessed.
The Mixed Age Family Class Format
In a mixed-age Music Together® class at Elevated Arts, you will find children and their families singing, dancing, and playing instruments together. You will hear laughter and a blend of diverse voices, and you will see smiles and looks of amazement and curiosity on the faces of parents and children. While some children sit in the laps of their parents or caregivers, others independently explore the room, the instruments, and their own movement in relation to the music. Some children are spontaneous singers and movers, while others are careful and astute observers. Even when your child gives no response or seems uninterested in listening or participating, important subconscious learning is taking place.
Classes begin with the "Hello Song," in which each child is greeted individually. The music continues with selections from one of the nine Music Together song collections (a new collection each session), which include well-known traditional songs and nursery rhymes, music from as far away as Africa and South America, and fun chants that allow children to focus on rhythm. Simple instruments and props such as sticks, shakers, drums, scarves, and balls may be used and explored however the children wish. Most children eagerly anticipate the instrument-play period—a real "jam session"—near the end of each class. Then comes a lullaby, a sweet time for parents or caregivers and children to reconnect. At the end of class, each child is acknowledged once again in the "Goodbye Song".
Join us for Flute Song Collection this Fall!
When you join us, each semester you’ll learn twenty-five new songs and activities that your family will enjoy in class and at home. Your children will love zooming to the moon like a “Rocketship,” wiggling and clapping to “Shake Those ‘Simmons Down,” and drumming to the Native American folksong “The Earth Is Our Mother.” In addition to imaginative and engaging weekly classes, your tuition includes materials for you to use at home, online access to the curriculum and support materials on the Family Music Zone, and a family newsletter full of resources and music-making ideas. This semester, we will also be celebrating the International Day of Peace with a very special Music Together Around the World party and you are invited!
